23 April 2024. With 1,700 exhibitors from 53 countries, Techtextil and Texprocess 2024 are underscoring their pioneering significance for the global industry. At the opening event, the leading international trade fairs focused on the highly relevant subject of AI and thus generated future-oriented impulses. AI offers new opportunities along the entire value chain 每 from production and processing to recycling. In the panel talk, experts explained how AI is energising the textile industry.

With 1,700 exhibitors from 53 countries, Techtextil and Texprocess 2024 are the centre for future-oriented innovations by the international textile industry 每 from progressive technologies to revolutionary materials. Moreover, for its 20th edition, Techtextil presents itself in a new dimension. Texprocess is also strongly positioned across all product groups. The materials, products, machines and processes presented at the two trade fairs, as well as the newly forged business alliances, are paving the way for the future of the industry. ※Frankfurt is once again the centre for textile and technological innovations, which are often presented to the public for the first time at Techtextil and Texprocess. These are an important indicator and driving force for the future of many other branches of industry. On its 20th anniversary, Techtextil has become larger than ever before and, together with Texprocess, is in great shape,§ said Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, in his speech.

At the opening event, Techtextil and Texprocess generated forward-looking impulses in a panel talk entitled: From textile recycling to garment processing 每 the role of AI. Discussing about the opportunities of using AI in the fields of textile production and processing were Chlo谷 Salmon Legagneur, Director, CETIA, Prof. Dr. Ingo Rollwagen, AMD Akademie Mode & Design / Hochschule Fresenius, Senior Advisor IMP Consulting, Elgar Straub, Managing Director, VDMA Textile Care, Fabrics and Leather Technologies, and Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies, Messe Frankfurt.

Artificial intelligence in the textile industry
Identifying new approaches, utilising potential and improving existing processes 每 AI represents a great opportunity for progress in the textile industry. Those who engage with the new developments today are well positioned for the future. The advantages of AI solutions are evident: greater efficiency, competitiveness, transparency and sustainability. However, making the most of AI calls for expertise, investment and the suitable technologies. The panel talk looked at how AI can be used to best effect in the textile industry from a variety of perspectives.

New opportunities with AI

Artificial Intelligence offers new opportunities for innovation. On the one hand, developments are emerging that use AI to improve traditional textile manufacturing and processing operations and to make them more efficient, e.g., intelligent fault detection during production or optimised material calculations make production and processing faster, better and more sustainable. On the other hand, AI can be used to create completely new products. ※AI expands the scope for innovations. In addition to accelerating and increasing the efficiency of existing processes, it creates added value by improving products. For example, in the form of circular, regenerative textile solutions with longer life cycles. In the future, AI will make it possible to not just do the same thing faster but also to create completely new, better, more individual and more sustainable textile solutions that are better tailored to the customer and also better for the environment,§ explained Prof. Dr. Ingo Rollwagen in his keynote speech.

Textile recycling reimagined with AI

Most textile waste is either returned to the retail trade as second-hand fashion, ends up in landfill sites or is incinerated. Hence, demand for recycling solutions, e.g., for old clothes, remains high. Moreover, the EU Green Deal also calls for scalable recycling solutions. New developments with AI integration promise to provide a remedy for this in the future, for example, by differentiating between textile and non-textile materials, such as zips, and separating them automatically. The French innovation platform CETIA is developing industrial solutions that prepare textiles for the recycling process. “Efficient, innovative technologies are needed to enable textile recycling on a large scale. Automation, robotics and AI increase profitability and competitiveness. Interdisciplinary cooperation between?research and industry is essential for this,” explains Chlo谷 Salmon Legagneur in the panel talk.

Techtextil and Texprocess driving new technologies

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a buzzword for companies. Indeed, it is rapidly changing the industry and finding its way into more and more applications. This also means that the industry has to get involved with AI to remain competitive and utilise the many advantages that it offers. As international meeting places for the industry, Techtextil and Texprocess are the first ports of call for gathering information and exchanging ideas. ※The industry is facing major changes. Although AI creates many new opportunities, it also confronts companies with a variety of transformational challenges. We look forward to accompanying the international industry through this process and highlighting potential solutions at Techtextil and Texprocess. Together, we can leverage the unique potential for the future,§ said Olaf Schmidt.

At the two trade fairs, participants find innovative solutions and partners that will propel their companies forward and make them ready for the future 每 whether progressive start-ups or top-class research institutes. Expert knowledge is available at first hand from the Techtextil and Texprocess forums, e.g., on the subject of &Textile value chain digitalisation and data driven AI business models* or &AI-Based Real-Time Energy Optimization in the Textile Industry*, as well as a guided tour of Texprocess exhibitors focusing on digitalisation and AI. Additionally, two Texprocess Innovation Award winners were honoured in the &Digitalisation + AI* category.

Examples of AI integration can also be found in the portfolios of ever more exhibitors. Visitors can look forward to intelligent systems that analyse fashion trends using AI, for example, use image analysis to identify faults or sort old clothes, as well as to network different production steps intelligently with one another. “Advances in the field of AI have come at exactly the right time for the textile processing industry. New technologies offer genuine opportunities to tackle challenges such as labour shortages, the demand for greater sustainability and resource scarcity,” says Elgar Straub.

Techtextil and Texprocess 2024: Innovations and networking on subjects of major significance for the future of the industry

Italian textile technology has always been a reliable partner for the India*s textile industry. Now a new promotional initiative aims to boost trade relations between the two Countries in the textile sector. Indeed 11 Italian textile machinery manufacturers will be taking part in the forthcoming technological symposia scheduled in New Delhi and Mumbai from 9 to 12 April. The two events, organized by the Italian Trade Agency and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will allow Italian companies to showcase their most up-to-date technologies to a selected audience of Indian textile entrepreneurs.

The textile sector is of great significance in the Indian economy, contributing more than 2% of the GDP and allowing the Country to be among the world largest exporter of textile and apparel items. Moreover India represents the third largest foreign market for the Italian textile machinery industry.

Marco Salvad豕, president of ACIMIT comments: ※In India textile sector is steadily developing, not only in terms of traditional textiles. The strong growth in demand for technical and innovative textiles in application areas such as geotextiles and medical is another business opportunity for our industry. These symposia will provide an opportunity to highlight the supply of Italian manufacturers, who are at the forefront especially in sustainability and digitization of production processes.§

In 2022 India imported Italian textile machinery for a total value of about 200 million euro. Referring to the first 9 months of 2023, the value shows a slight decrease compared to the value for the same period of the previous year, but the forecast for the current year remains positive.

※These technology symposia are part of a promotional program that ITA and ACIMIT have been developing for years to strengthen trade relations between the two Countries in the textile field, continues Salvad豕. In particular, I would like to mention that the first Italian textile technology training center set up was the one established at DKTE*S Textile & Engineering Institute Ichalkaranji (DKTE).§

Since the beginning of this year, the Chinese government has implemented a wide array of measures to incentivize consumption and facilitate an all-encompassing resurgence in the consumer landscape, resulting in a gradual recuperation of both household income and consumer assurance. Chinese chemical fiber industry faced a weak recovery amidst high production and start-up rates, contrary to the ※strong expectations§ that were held. As a result, the seasonality of the market was more pronounced than anticipated, with the average prices of major chemical fiber products declining and shrinking profits putting a strain on corporate profitability. Compared to previous years, the Spring Festival had a stronger impact this year, resulting in a decrease in industry performance during the first quarter. However, the chemical sector exhibited a gradual resurgence during the second and third quarters, ultimately resulting in a general enhancement of profitability. Moreover, the export of chemical fibers showed significant improvement, with polyester products leading the way with a growth rate of over 20% in the first three quarters.

  1. Production & Sales

From March onwards, the industry has sustained a notable level of overall operating load. Taking the direct-spun polyester filament as an example, it has yielded positive results with an average operating load of around 84% during the second quarter and about 90% in the third quarter. Amidst the customary peak season in October, the demand from downstream markets remains strong, and the average operating load rate maintains a 90% level. Furthermore, in light of the Asian Games, there was a noticeable decrease in output in the Xiaoshan and Shaoxing districts; however, business activities promptly resumed following the conclusion of the National Day festivities.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the output of chemical fibers in the first three quarters this year totaled 52.30 million tons, seeing year-on-year growth of 6.86%, 7.18 percentage points higher than the same period last year. The growth rate showed a gradual upward trend, that of the first three quarters was 2.96 percentage points higher than the growth rate in the first half of this year. By Provinces and municipalities, the output of chemical fibers in Zhejiang Province increased by 4.7% year-on-year in the first three quarters; Jiangsu Province, up by 19.6% year-on-year; Fujian Province, down by 7.6% year-on-year.

III. Foreign Trade

According to Chinese Customs, the exports of main chemical fibers totaled 4.73 million tons, growing by 19.0% year-on-year, with 1.6 percentage points higher than that of the first half.

Table 2: Foreign Trade of Chemical Fiber Products in Q1-Q3

  1. Domestic & External Demand

The domestic market vitality for textiles and apparel has shown strong growth since the start of this year, maintaining a fast-paced momentum. National Bureau of Statistics data show that in the first three quarters, China*s retail sales of clothing, foot & head wear and knitted goods grew by 10.6% year-on-year, 14.6 percentage points rebounded from the same period last year, hitting second place among the 16 major categories of goods. Throughout the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day break, there was a notable surge in consumer demand for textiles and apparel, resulting in a significant 17.5% year-on-year increase in sales for major retail giants in the clothing sector across the nation. Online retail sales of wearing goods increased by 9.6% year-on-year, 4.9 percentage points faster than the same period last year. But compared with the growth rate of food categories, that of the wearing goods saw a slower growth.

Due to the impact of decreased international demand, a volatile trade climate, and other contributing factors, China*s textile sector has experienced a notable increase in export pressure this year. However, certain markets continue to show positive growth in exports. According to data from China Customs, China*s textile and apparel exports in the first three quarters of this year amounted to US$ 223.15 billion, seeing a year-on-year decrease of 10.1%. Among the main exported products, the exports of textiles, including yarns, fabrics, and manufactured products, totaled US$ 101.92 billion, down by 10.3% year-on-year; apparel exports amounted to US$ 121.23 billion, down by 8.8% year-on-year. China*s textile and apparel exports to major markets such as the United States, the European Union, Japan, and ASEAN all declined compared to the previous year. However, exports to Turkey and Russia, as well as the countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), experienced year-on-year growth of 6.2% and 20.1%, respectively.

  1. Economic Benefits

The chemical fiber industry*s economic efficacy in the first three quarters remains in line with the 2022 downward trend. Nevertheless, quarter-on-quarter analysis of efficiency indicators indicates a gradual progression, with yearly decreases in operating income and total profits gradually shrinking, and a downward trend in the growth rate of loss-making enterprises. According to the National Bureau of Statistics data, the operating income of China*s chemical fiber industry grew by 2.81% year-on-year in the first three quarters. And the revenue margin reached 1.67%, 0.51 percentage points higher than that of the first half.

Concerning classification, the profitability of polyester POY in the second half of the year excels that of the first half, particularly in May, June, September, and October. But its profitability declined since November. Despite maintaining profitability, the acrylic sector*s performance in the second half has been weaker compared to the first half. The financial viability of polyamide FDY surpasses that of polyamide POY. The loss value of viscose staples was narrower than before.

  1. Fixed-assets Investment

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the fixed-asset investment in the chemical fiber industry fell by 11.6% year-on-year in the first three quarters of this year, 4.6 percentage points higher than that of the first half. However, on the other hand, nearly 10 million tons of polyester production capacity have been put into operation so far.

Figure 2: Fixed-Assets Investment Growth of the Chemical Fiber Industry from 2008

VII. Market Forecast

Over the course of time, as the economy maintains its recovery, employment situations steadily advance, and market supply undergoes consistent optimization, the implementation of the consumption promotion policy will reinforce the foundation for revitalizing and expanding consumption. The prevailing forecast appears favorable and is expected to provide substantial support for China*s chemical fiber market. Nevertheless, the primary concern plaguing the sector remains the potential for enhancing the supply and demand dynamics. It is anticipated that a prolonged period will be required to rectify the development cycle. The upcoming year is promising for the chemical fiber industry. In particular, it is anticipated that the pressure on the supply side will be alleviated. From the beginning of 2024, the expansion of polyester filament capacity will enter a limited range, thereby mitigating the escalation of potential supply and demand conflicts. The demand-side potential is expected to be released. Due to the implementation of a series of measures aimed at boosting domestic demand, the domestic sales of China*s textile and apparel industry have been secured. Moreover, there is still untapped growth potential, particularly in the diversified consumer markets, as well as the expanding industrial use of technical textiles and the emergence of innovative forms of online retailing. As for export sales, with the change in China*s textile industry*s international division of labor status, the structure of foreign trade in different products is adjusting and optimizing. It is expected that the share of chemical fibers and relevant products exports will continue to show good momentum.

  • France’s first automated textile waste sorting and recycling plant, inaugurated at Nouvelles Fibres Textiles, is a collaboration between recycling company Nouvelles Fibres Textiles, waste sorting specialist Pellenc ST, and Andritz.
  • The plant, addressing the EU’s sustainable textile goals, automatically sorts garments by composition and colour.

France*s first industrial plant for automated sorting and recycling of textile waste has been officially inaugurated at Nouvelles Fibres Textiles, Amplepuis. The plant is the result of an ambitious partnership between textile recycling company Nouvelles Fibres Textiles, waste sorting specialist Pellenc ST and international technology group Andritz, a specialist in textile recycling machinery and processes.

This partnership is a clear contribution to tackling the challenge of textile waste in the EU. The EU’s strategy for sustainable and circular textiles aims to ensure that by 2030 textile products are made to a great extent of recycled fibres and incineration and landfilling of textiles are minimised, the company said in a press release.

Capable of automatically sorting garments by composition and colour, the new line meets the needs of both post-consumer and post-industrial waste markets. The line also removes hard parts such as buttons and zippers to prepare the material for further processing in an Andritz tearing machine.

The automated textile sorting line at Nouvelles Fibres Textiles is dedicated to industrial-scale production, customer trials and projects, and the R&D activities of the partners. It will process textile waste to produce recycled fibres for the spinning, nonwovens, and composites industries.

Automated sorting was the last missing link needed to develop a complete ecosystem in France, where the fashion industry, social and solidarity economy actors, waste management companies, and textile producers from different sectors are working together towards a textile circular economy.

※The opening of the new line marks a milestone in our efforts to turn textile waste into resources. And we are already laying the foundations for a second material preparation plant with a capacity to process 25,000 tons of post-consumer textiles per year,§?Eric Boel, general manager, Nouvelles Fibres Textiles, said.

※We are proud to be part of the sustainable transformation. With our technologies and our close partnership with Nouvelles Fibres Textiles and Pellenc ST, Andritz is making a significant contribution to a circular economy for textiles,§?Alexandre Butte, general manager, Andritz Laroche, said.
